Indonesia, with its 6,400,000 km2 of ocean area and 110,000 km of coastline, along with a tropical climate, is a suitable region for the growth of various types of seaweed.
As part of the world's coral triangle, Indonesia has at least 550 types of seaweed variants with high economic value out of around 8,000 types worldwide that can thrive well in Indonesia. One of them is the Eucheuma cottoni type, which is estimated to have a total potential value of USD 10 billion per year in Indonesia.
Referring to data released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2019, Indonesia is the world's number one producer of the Eucheuma cottoni seaweed and controls over 80 percent of the world's supply. For this type, Indonesia has successfully developed it with tissue culture technology.
In addition to its savory taste, seaweed also offers various health benefits such as maintaining thyroid function, being a source of vitamins and minerals, serving as an antioxidant, maintaining digestion and intestinal health, reducing the risk of heart disease, reducing body fat, and more.
With the support of abundant seaweed resources, it is hoped that Indonesia can maintain its position as the world's largest seaweed producer. The main seaweed-producing areas in Indonesia are in 10 provinces, namely: South Sulawesi Province, Central Sulawesi Province, East Nusa Tenggara Province, East Java Province, Southeast Sulawesi Province, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Bali Province, Gorontalo Province, Maluku Province, and West Java Province.
In addition to exports, the government is promoting seaweed consumption in daily menus and the use of seaweed as an additional ingredient in various food industries.
